William and Julia’s children

Patrick Cleary

  • Baptised 13 August 1852
  • Unmarried
  • Died 20 June 1872 aged 19

Patrick Cleary, the first child of WIlliam and Julia was baptised on 13 August 1852 in St Michan’s Catholic Church, Halston Street, Dublin. His date of birth is not recorded.

Patrick was a butcher in Ormond Market.

Patrick died on 17 June 1872, aged 19 years. The death certificate indicates that he died of Phthisis, otherwise known as pulmonary TB, which he had for one month. The certificate also tells us that he was living at no. 3, Circle, Ormond Market and the informant was John Lawlor, 2 Daltons Row, Ormond market. As Patrick’s mother was Julia Lawlor, it seems likely that John Lawlor was Patrick’s uncle or cousin, and that Patrick was working for him in his victuallers business.

Dublin Street directory for 1862 shows no 7 Royal Row was occupied by John Lawler, Victualler. It seems likely that the same John Lawler was operating from a different premises within Ormond Market by 1872 when Patrick died.

Patrick is buried in Goldenbridge cemetery west of the city. In section Goldenbridge main: K4. This is adjacent to where William will be buried.

Mary Jane Cleary

  • Born 17 May 1855
  • Married 24 Jan 1875

Mary Jane Cleary was born on 17 May 1855 and baptised on 21 May 1855 in St Michan’s Church. Her family were living at 6 Royal Row, Ormond Market. The sponsors were Henry Ryan and Ellen Lawlor, her mother’s sister.

Mary married Andrew Fitzpatrick in St Michan’s on 24 January 1875 when she was 19 years. Her father had died a few days previously.

Andrew was born 24 Nov 1853. At the time of the marriage, Mary was living at 14 Royal Row and Andrew, 217 Great Britain Street (Parnell Street). Andrew’s father’s occupation was shoemaker while Mary’s fathers’ occupation was ‘ginger beer bottler’. The witnesses were John McCarthy and Jane Fitzpatrick. Jane was Andrew’s sister. A few weeks later, on 7 Feb 1875, Jane married John McCarthy in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral.

Mary had four children, at least.

  • Mary Jane b. 20 August 1875, living at 4 Flag Alley. Ellen Lawlor 4, Royal Row, registered the birth
  • Julia b. 29 Oct 1876, living in 3 Royal Row. Ellen Lawlor 4, Royal Row, registered the birth
  • Eliza b. 18 July 1881, living in 3 Walkers Alley. Registered by Mary Broderick(?) 15 Fisher Lane.
  • Ellen b. 30 July 1882, living in 3 Walkers Alley. Mary Fitzpatrick registered the birth.

It is likely that Andrew died, aged 38, in 1891 of TB. He died in the Whitworth Hospital.

In 1901, Mary was again living with her mother at 111 Capel Street. There were six people from four related families living in two rooms. She was present at her brother Harry’s funeral in 1911. She was the only one of his siblings there.

Elizabeth (Eliza) Cleary

  • Born c. 1859
  • Married 9 April 1877
  • Died 24 Dec 1878 Aged 19

Eliza was born in 1859, but I have not located the record of her birth or baptism.

Aged 18 years, Eliza married Thomas Kidd on 9 April 1877. They were living at 14 Royal Row, Ormond Market. The following year, on 2 December 1878, she gave birth to a daughter, Christina Kidd. Three weeks later Eliza died of ‘decline’, she never recovered from the birth. She was just 19. The following October 21, 1879, Christina, aged 10 months, died of convulsions.

At the time of Christina’s birth, they were living at 6 Charles Row and at her death 6 Arran Street East. This appears to be the home of Julia Cleary (Lawlor), the grandmother. All addresses are in and around Ormond Market. Christina’s fathers’ occupation was ‘ironmoulder’. A number of foundries, including Hammond Lane were located nearby.

Ellen Cleary

  • Born 22 Feb 1860
  • Married 10 Jan 1891

Ellen was born on 22 Feb 1860 and baptised in St Michan’s on 27 Feb. The address on the transcript if 6 Druan Market. The original is not available. I suspect the address is actually 6 Ormond Market. Ellen married Henry Corrigan (1866-1905) on 10 January 1891. She was married from 50 Capel Street and Henry’s address was 3 Kelly Lane, Phibsboro. Harry Cleary was the witness at the wedding.

Ellen had two children

  • William born 1891, died 1952
  • Henry born 1898 and died in1927 of TB aged 29. He was a warehouseman.

The boys are the W and H Corrigan (nephews) mentioned in Harry Cleary’s obituary. Ellen was not at the funeral and is not listed in the 1911 census.

Julia Cleary

  • Born 3 Sep 1862
  • married 3 Mar 1888
  • died 06 Jan 1901 age 35

Julia was Born on 3 Sep 1862 at an address in Coles Lane and baptised in St Mary’s Pro-cathedral. This is surprising as the children before and after Julia were living in Ormond Row and baptised in St Michans.

She married Bernard Grant on 3 Mar 1888. Along with Harry Cleary, Bernard was a member of the Rotunda branch of the Irish Independent League, a grassroots pro-Parnellite movement. Bernard was Bestman at Harry’s wedding. Bernard was a tram conductor.

Julia was the mother of at least seven children that we have details for.

  • Anna Marie b. 1884 at 6 Dawson Row
  • Mary b 1887c.
  • John Joseph b 23 Jan 1888 at 7 Norfolk Street, off Britain Street.
  • Henry 1891c. Married Marcella Murray at St Winifred, Manchester on 3 Mar 1919.
  • Patrick b. 9 Nov 1891 at 50 Capel St.,
  • Elizabeth b. 19 Feb 1893 at 50 Capel Street, d. 13 March 1897 at 111 Capel St, her grandmother’s home.
  • Julia b. Jan 1895, d 13 Feb 1895 of convulsions at 63 Pill Lane (Chancery Street)

Julia died 6 Jan 1901, aged 35, of chronic rheumatism. She was living at 1 Greek Street. In the 190 Census, Bernard is living with his two sons in Greek Street. Strangely they are stated to be his brothers. His daughters, Mary and Anne, are living with their Grandmother, aunt and cousins at 111 Capel Street.

By 1911, Bernard is living with his son, Henry, and his brother John in Little Strand Steet. The details for Bernard state that he had 13 children born and four living. Bernard may have died in 1918 of acute pneumonia aged 60.

John Joseph Cleary

  • b. 25 Sep 1864

John Joseph Cleary was both on 25 Sep 1864 at 5 Royal Row.

It is likely he died in 1865 aged 10 months.

Harry Cleary

  • b. 7 Aug 1866
  • m. 7 Aug 1892
  • d 12 Mar 1911

Henry Francis Cleary was known as Harry to his family. There is a separate post for Harry

Sarah Cleary was born on 31 August 1869 when her family lived at 6 Royal Row, Ormond Market. The birth was registered by Ellen Lawlor, Sarah aunt. Her father, William’s occupation is given as mineral water bottler.

She may have died on 11 Feb 1872 age 3 years – this requires confirmation
